I experimented with column shapes for my 3D piece. This is 10½ inches high and about 4½ inches wide at the base. I used a light weight rust-dyed fabric and added patches of a rusted vintage linen napkin. In order for it to stand, I stitched 5 quarter inch seams around the body and inserted a firm but flexible wire in the tuck to create ribs.
As I was working on this, I imaged a tall stone monument created by an ancient civilization. In the back story, archeologists have tried to decipher the markings carved into the stone for decades, but the meaning has been lost to time.
I enjoyed the process and am happy with the result. In fact, I making more Obelisks in different sizes, but using a heavier canvas-like fabric. I think I'll make the ribs inside this time and add hand stitching.
