The Neglected Global Garden Fence Conversing with the Earth 1 by Cindy Brendzel

The potential for the theme “Conversations with Earth” is so vast I had a difficult time starting. In the end I decided to focus on something relatable that could have global implications.  My piece, “The Neglected Global-Garden Fence” is the result.  I imagined what would happen if a carefully constructed fence built to manage the surrounding natural landscape was damaged and abandoned.  What if the owner just walked away saying “someday” I’ll get to it, as the unimpeded growth slowly pushed through.

I believe abandon places, such as a simple wooden fence found in almost any neighborhood, serves as a testament to human ingenuity in its attempt to hold back unwanted conditions.  At the same time I want this image to be a reminder of our vulnerability to continually changing environmental conditions.

If we neglect our responsibility to take care of the Earth instead of just containing it, I believe the outcome parallels the neglect of a garden fence that eventually falls apart. The damage caused by humankind through actions like deforestation, pollution, and climate change can have far-reaching and long-lasting effects on the environment, disrupting ecosystems, causing loss of biodiversity, and threatening the well-being of future generations.

For this piece I used commercial cottons and cotton fabric printed with my own photographs and hand-painted, also burlap and spent tea bags.  It measures 24 X 32 inches.
