FLOWERS - Spring I

My first spring in Kaunas, Lithuania, was a wonderful surprise. I was captivated by the variety and vivid colours of the flowers blooming in gardens and parks, and took hundreds of photographs to capture their beauty.
These images became the starting point for a series of three textile collages inspired by this new landscape and my experience of discovering it. Through this series, I am exploring my collage technique, moving closer to the natural forms of flowers while retaining the freedom of abstraction. The aim is not to reproduce them realistically, but to interpret their shapes, colours and textures through fabric and stitch.
The process
Some of the flowers were made using tiny scraps of different fabrics (linen, silk, cotton) and dyed cheesecloth, sewn together with water-soluble stabilizer

Next came the making of the background, for which I chose a dark, patterned brown. But I didn't have enough of that, so I added some lighter, solid colour, which complemented it well.

Then came the flowers and stems. After much moving around, placing and displacing, I finally chose the threads

and started to appliqué, fusing, stitching and quilting
