Samhain Fires 24" x 32"
“Every carbon atom in every living thing on the planet was produced in the heart of a dying star.” Brian Cox “Wonders of the Universe”
Ever since I came across this quote it has been with me, reminding me that we are all connected, we are all made of the same stuff!
Samhain Fires is the second in a series of four quilts inspired by the theme “Conversing with the Earth”. Although our challenge called for only three pieces in response to the theme as my research developed and my plan of action began to form, I knew I needed to make four. Inspired by alchemy, the base elements of earth, fire , water and air
Samhain is one of four seasonal Celtic festivals marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter and is celebrated from the evening of the 31st of October to the following evening as Celtic day began at sunset and is associated with bonfires and feasting. It is also a liminal or threshold festival, where the boundary between dimensions weakens, making a cross over from both sides possible.
This time of year is marked by the magnificent colours of changing leaves, ranging from pale yellow through lush oranges and fiery reds, almost as if the trees are on fire and I love watching the change.
“Samhain Fires” is an exploration of the element fire as a feminine entity, fire destroys and renews, this duality is part of the attraction.
The image was created in an AI (artificial intelligence) program and then played with in another program before being digitally printed and then intensively free-motion quilted.
Day one quilting 6 hours!
The quilting process is slow and long, allowing me to reflect on the work at hand and drop into a flow state where time disappears, with only the passing of the colours beneath my fingers working their therapeutic magic.
