When I communicate with Earth, it is always with the Earth mothers or goddesses whom I engage with as the seasons shift. These goddesses safeguard the lands, sky, and waters.
I am a seasonal person. I like to see the changes in my world, my community, in the land and in the night sky. In the fall, the sun dips lower in the sky and sets earlier than other seasons. It might be considered an ending, but I see the change from summer to fall differently. After the hot lazy summer, when plants and flowers can't help but grow, Autumn brings the bounty of hard work to my life. Glorious fall flowers, sunflowers in my backyard keep me company. They take longer to grow than many spring or summer flowers and are just so happy.
My golden goddess was inspired by the work of Alfredo Ramos Martinez. His work - Florida Mexicana, painted in 1936. She looks like who, I think, my goddess would resemble. She would be hard working as she spends time harvesting the bounty of the fields to save for winter.
While this goddess arrives with baskets of flowers, I wanted my goddess to be walking through fields of Sunflowers
Each sunflower in this piece is hand-stitched and adorned with beads, then shadows are added with darker paint. My vision of the earth goddess shines through in the intricate details, portraying a harmonious blend of inner and outer beauty. The choice of shiny materials adds a different dimension, capturing the essence of a radiant glow that emanates from within. The bronze tuile that envelops the surface creates the warm brilliance of a late afternoon sun casting shadows that dance with the light.
This detail not only enhances the visual appeal of the piece but also infuses it with a sense of depth and meaning, inviting viewers to contemplate the interplay between light and shadow that is unique to fall.
